An attempt was made April 28 on Maj. Gen. Azatbek Omurbekov in Russia’s Khabarovsk Krai, international volunteer OSINT project InformNapalm reported on April 29.

InformNapalm said the attack occurred at a military garrison in Knyaze-Volkonskoye-1. According to the report, an explosive device placed in a mailbox on a stairwell detonated. Lt. Col. Kuzmenko, commander of a training communications battalion, was killed and several others were wounded. Omurbekov’s condition was unknown, and InformNapalm said authorities were trying to conceal the incident.

InformNapalm said it identified Omurbekov in April 2022 as a senior officer responsible for atrocities during the Russian occupation of Bucha, Kyiv Oblast. Russian dictator Vladimir Putin awarded him the title “Hero of Russia” for what InformNapalm described as brutality and mass killings of Ukrainians.

The report said Omurbekov commanded the 64th Separate Motor Rifle Brigade which is accused of committing hundreds of war crimes in Kyiv and Kharkiv oblasts. InformNapalm said that although his brigade lost more than 90% of its personnel, Omurbekov soon received a new posting and took command of the 386th Motor Rifle Regiment and a training center for junior specialists in Khabarovsk Krai.
