Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer has stated that it is necessary to start negotiations with Russia to end the war in Ukraine, Spanish newspaper El Mundo reported on Feb. 26.

He suggested that to help facilitate the peace talks, other BRICS countries should be asked to mediate.

Nehammer thinks that as the third year of full-scale Russian invasion begins, it is imperative to “do more” and push for a ceasefire.

He added that Russia’s BRICS partners— Brazil, India, China, and South Africa—could be involved in the negotiation process.

“Austria has always had a strong stance on the conflict: Russia must not succeed, but if it helps, I would fly to Moscow again [to help arrange peace negotiations],” the chancellor said.

Nehammer added that he is concerned that the war in Ukraine could escalate into a broader conflict between Russia and the West—for instance, if NATO troops are at some point deployed to Ukraine

“Being dragged into a full-scale war would not bring us more security,” he said.
