Germany’s Baerbock elected U.N. Assembly head despite Russia’s protest

Though Baerbock ran unopposed, Russia forced a secret ballot by objecting to her appointment, calling her “blatantly biased” due to her vocal condemnation of Moscow’s war on Ukraine. The rare move blocked the usual acclamation process and highlighted growing tensions in U.N. proceedings, Euronews reported.

Only four countries voted against Baerbock, who is set to begin her one-year term on Sept. 9. She will be the first German to lead the General Assembly in over half a century.

As Euronews noted, Baerbock’s election is widely seen as a symbolic win for Kyiv’s allies within the United Nations, underscoring continued support for Ukraine in global forums despite Russian pushback.
