Accelerating the development of Kyiv's domestic ballistic missile program is a “top priority” for the Ukrainian government, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on May 2.

The president made the statement after a meeting with Ukraine’s top military commanders earlier that day.

“Received reports on supplying our brigades and fleshing out our military units,” Zelenskyy wrote in a Telegram post.

“Also—very detailed discussions about our missile program, our own missile design and manufacturing. Our top priority is to accelerate as much as possible the development of Ukraine’s ballistic missiles.”

He added that having domestic long-range strike capabilities “clear and effective guarantee of security for Ukraine.”

Earlier, Zelenskyy stated that more than 40% of all weapons currently used on the front lines are produced in Ukraine.

On Feb. 25, Ukraine’s Digital Transformation Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said 19 Ukrainian companies are manufacturing various types of missiles — from small UAV-launched models to ballistic and cruise missiles.

In October 2024, Zelenskyy announced that the first Ukrainian ballistic missile had passed flight tests.
