Toretsk battles could weaken Russian forces before winter offensive

Military analyst Denys Popovych discussed the ongoing battles for Toretsk on Radio NV, explaining that Russian forces have infiltrated the central part of the city. He highlighted the complexity of urban warfare, where control over individual buildings can change hands frequently, making it difficult to define a front line.

Popovych emphasized that seizing Toretsk is strategically important for Russian forces as it would enable them to launch attacks on Kostyantynivka from another direction.

However, he noted that street battles could exhaust Russian troops, potentially stalling their offensive before winter.

In August, Russian forces entered Toretsk, and by mid-September, the Institute for the Study of War reported advances in the city's eastern areas. Geolocated footage from late September showed Russian forces advancing westward along Druzhba Street, and by early October, analysts confirmed that Russian troops had reached the city center.

As of Oct. 11, Vasyl Chinchyk, head of the Toretsk Military Administration, stated that Russian forces now control about 50% of the city, with heavy fighting continuing in urban areas.
