BBC Mariupol documentary nominated for 2023 BAFTA Awards

Several news programs covering the war in Ukraine, along with BBC’s documentary film Mariupol: The People’s Story, are among the nominees for 2023 British Academy of Film and Television (BAFTA) Television Awards, according to a message on the academy’swebsite.

In particular, two programs were nominated for Best News Coverage award: BBC News at 10: Russia Invades Ukraine and Channel 4 News: Live in Kyiv are among the three nominees in this category.

The Concert for Ukraine, held on March 29, 2022, was nominated for Best Live Event. The charity concert was broadcast by ITV1 and featured famous artists including Snow Patrol, Ed Sheeran, Tom O'Dell, Billie Eilish, Manic Street Preachers, Camila Cabello, Paloma Faith, Jamala, and others. The event raised $16 million to aid people affected by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In the Current Affairs category, BBC Panorama documentary Mariupol: The People’s Story is in the running. The film, directed by Robin Barnwell, tells how a thriving Ukrainian city was demolished. The people of Mariupol share powerful and shocking stories of bravery, loss, and determination during the war, as per the description of the documentary.

The BAFTA Awards ceremony will take place on May 14, 2023. The full list of nominees was published by The Guardian.
