Shmyhal made the announcement following a corresponding agreement he signed with his Belgian counterpart Alexander De Croo.
As per the deal, the funds will be directed towards the restoration of energy and social infrastructure in Kyiv and Chernihiv oblasts, which suffered from Russian occupation in early 2022 and remain under persistent Russian air strikes.
The reconstruction program will be implemented over the next four years, focusing on rebuilding schools, hospitals, and energy facilities. The first tranche of EUR 20 million will be directed towards the restoration of key energy facilities in Kyiv. Additionally, bomb shelters will be built in Ukrainian schools.
“It is extremely important to continue supporting the Ukrainian people, especially now, as the Russian army is advancing again and attacks on civilian objects have increased,” Belgian Minister for Development Caroline Gennez said in a sperate statement.
On May 28, Ukraine and Belgium signed a bilateral security agreement.
