According to a Jan. 7 report by the AP, Pentagon sources did not disclose the exact amount of the aid but indicated that the package would be "significant." However, it will not include the entire $4 billion allocated by Congress for Ukraine. They noted that there would likely remain a "few billion dollars" that Donald Trump’s White House could provide to Ukraine if they choose to do so.
Austin will attend a Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting in Ramstein, Germany, on Jan. 9.
A Pentagon source added that the package announced this week would be drawn from existing stockpiles to deliver most of the promised weaponry to Ukraine before Trump takes office on Jan. 20.
On Dec. 30, 2024, the U.S. government announced $3.4 billion in direct budgetary support to Ukraine. Earlier that day, President Biden announced nearly $2.5 billion in security assistance for Ukraine.
The aid package included capabilities for immediate frontline use and long-term supplies of air defense systems, artillery, and other critical weapon systems.
