“We recorded fires in the western part of the exclusion zone — on the border with the Zhytomyr Oblast and not far from the Chornobyl nuclear power plant,” Ukrainian news agency Interfax-Ukraine reported Kramarenko as saying.
During this time, according to an analysis of satellite images, we counted more than 10 thousand hectares (of forest on fire). Partly with the help of rescuers, partly due to weather conditions, all these fires have been extinguished.”
It was earlier reported that 31 fires were discovered in the exclusion zone near the Chornobyl nuclear power plant. The fires covered a total area of 10,111 hectares.
Satellite images from NASA and the European Space Agency helped detect these large fires.
