After a series of Russian air strikes targeting energy infrastructure, parts of Kyiv and Chernihiv oblasts are in blackout, Ukraine’s Energy Ministry said in a statement on Oct. 1.

Repair crews were dispatched immediately, the ministry added.

Slavutych (Kyiv Oblast) Mayor Yuriy Fomichev reported that an attack on a local power substation left the entire city without electricity. Kyiv Regional State Administration said about 20,000 residents of the town remain without power as engineers work to switch the grid to a backup connection. Critical infrastructure sites are running on emergency generators.

Chernihiv Oblast grid operator Chernihivoblenergo also described the assault as “large-scale,” saying outages stem from serious damage caused by the enemy strikes. Beginning at 8 p.m. on Oct. 1, the operator imposed a rolling blackout schedule in the region.

Power disruptions were also reported in Dnipro City after locals saw a bright flash in the sky, according to public broadcaster Suspilne. DTEK Dnipro Electric Networks said it found no damage to its equipment or evidence of short circuits.
