“At the scene, a forensic-operational team, explosives technicians and other services are working; information about casualties is being determined,” police said.
Pavlo Petrov, a spokesman for the Kyiv State Emergency Service later said the explosion was caused by a faulty liquid petroleum gas (LPG) conversion device. Some Ukrainians modify their cars to run on LPG as a cheaper alternative to gasoline.
On Dec. 11, 2025, explosions in Kyiv’s Darnytskyi district killed a National Guard member who was patrolling the area with a colleague. Prosecutors said an improvised explosive device detonated.
On Dec. 12, Ukraine’s SBU security service and the National Police detained three suspects, men aged 23, 27 and 25 from Odesa and Donetsk oblasts, on suspicion of carrying out the Darnytskyi attack. Prosecutors allege the suspects were recruited by Russian intelligence, built the device, and placed it using coordinates provided by a Russian handler. Investigators also say the suspects set up mobile phones near the attack site that streamed video in real time to Russian forces.
On Jan. 4, an SUV exploded in the Obolon district of
Kyiv; authorities have classified that incident as a terrorist attack.
Investigators said a service member suffered shrapnel wounds and a woman nearby
was not injured.
