Chernihiv Oblast Defense Council has ordered a mandatory evacuation of 12 villages along the Belarus border beginning July 1, regional governor Viacheslav Chaus announced on Jule 24.

In a Facebook post, Chaus specified the evacuation was requested by the Ukrainian military.

The council also extended mandatory evacuation measures for seven border villages where evacuations were ordered earlier this year. Some residents left at that time; others refused to go.

Chaus said municipal and regional authorities estimate about 1,000 people remain in those settlements, including about 120 children. He said the evacuation plan is finalized and residents will be informed of gathering points.

“Evacuation routes and transportation are approved,” the governor said.

“Resettlement of people is a mandatory condition. Places for temporary accommodation will be provided. We plan to complete the evacuation within two months.”
