Seven women serving prison sentences have signed contracts with the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) in exchange for early release, the Ukrainian Justice Ministry reported on Facebook on July 24.

The women chose to serve in the military under contract.

They successfully passed the Military Medical Commission and received approval from military unit commanders to join specific units within the Ukrainian forces.

The new law on the conscription of convicted individuals, recently passed by the Ukrainian Parliament, permits both men and women to enlist in the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), Deputy Justice Minister Olena Vysotska said. However, women had not previously shown interest in conscription.

"We now have decisions from the first seven convicted individuals who have opted to sign contracts with the AFU," she said.

Since the law on conscripting convicted individuals took effect, 6,101 people have expressed interest in joining the AFU, and 3,823 have already departed correctional facilities for training.

A total of 3,800 prisoners were reportedly conscripted into the AFU. However, the number of those willing to go to the front from prison is declining. Among those conscripted, there have already been both injuries and fatalities.

Prisoner conscription in Ukraine

Vysotska said in May that 4,500 convicts agreed to be released on parole by signing a contract for military service.

The Ukrainian Parliament passed bill No. 11079-1 in its second reading on May 8, allowing certain categories of prisoners to be conscripted into the AFU. This can only occur after a court decision and must be voluntary. Those convicted of grievous premeditated murder, rape, sexual violence, crimes against national security, and similar offenses cannot be conscripted.

The ruling Servant of the People party clarified that convicted corrupt officials and people who held particularly responsible positions, including MPs and ministers, will not be able to join the AFU.

Prisoners eligible for conscription must have no more than three years left in their sentence.

Servant of the People party head, David Arakhamia, said the potential conscription resource among prisoners in Ukraine is 15,000-20,000 people, but only a few thousand are expected to actually sign contracts.
