Nine of the freed prisoners were illegally convicted defenders, including military sailors, three border guards, and 50 Azovstal defenders.

Additionally, six National Guardsmen from the Chernobyl garrison and servicemen who defended Kyiv, Donetsk, Kherson, and Luhansk oblasts were among those returning home.

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko stated that 92 of the released prisoners are servicemen from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, including 89 National Guard soldiers and three State Border Service soldiers, most of whom were conscripted and held captive for over two years.

Many released Ukrainian servicemen suffer from injuries and health issues due to Russia's disregard for international humanitarian law in captivity.

Earlier on Aug. 24, President Zelenskyy announced a new prisoner exchange with Russia, mediated by the UAE.

According to Russian media, Ukraine recovered 115 conscripts who had been captured in Kursk Oblast.
