Czech authorities plan to change rules on temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees, Novinky.cz reports on Nov. 2.

The report says the new government in the country aims to cut social benefits for Ukrainians.

The main reason for the potential changes is a sharp increase in the number of refugees, which is putting extra pressure on the national budget.

Since early autumn, more than 3,000 Ukrainians have been arriving in Czechia each week, roughly double previous figures.

The country now hosts about 400,000 Ukrainians, making it the EU leader in the number of Ukrainians per native resident, the report notes.

The new leadership has announced plans to review social assistance rules, keeping most benefits only for those unable to support themselves. This primarily affects the elderly, people with disabilities, and mothers with children. Working-age Ukrainians who are unemployed will see benefits reduced or eliminated — they are now expected to earn a living, find work, and integrate into the local economy.

Earlier, Czech government representative for Ukraine recovery, Tomáš Kopečný, said support programs for Ukraine will continue under the new government, although their form may change.
