Russian forces continue to advance in Ukraine’s Sumy Oblast using large numbers of infantry, and the situation is critical due to the threat of shelling with fiber-optic FPV drones, the DeepState portal reported on June 4.

Russian forces have captured the settlements of Andriivka and Vodolahy. The occupiers have also seized the northern part of Oleksiivka and are attempting to fully occupy the village. The situation in Kindrativka remains unclear, where Russian troops managed to enter, but Ukrainian forces are preventing them from establishing a foothold.

Yablunivka is also facing pressure, with Russian occupation troops advancing from Bilovody and between Bilovody and Loknya. According to DeepState, the invaders are entering Yunakivka from the northern outskirts but have been unable to hold the position.

“The situation remains critical as the enemy rapidly advances to within 20−25 kilometers, from which they could target Sumy with FPV drones using fiber optics, with similar attempts already made,” the report states.

DeepState adds that Ukrainian forces are working to contain the pressure from Russian troops.

Situation in Sumy Oblast

On May 28, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russia had amassed more than 50,000 troops in the Sumy direction.

On May 31, Oleh Hryhorov, head of the Sumy regional military administration, reported that a mandatory evacuation had been declared for 11 additional settlements.

DeepState analysts noted that Russian troops had crossed the border into Sumy Oblast in another area and advanced near the village of Oleksandriia. Later, analysts confirmed that Russian forces had occupied the village of Volodymyrivka.

On June 2, Ukraine's State Border Service reported that Russian forces were expanding their area of deployment in Sumy Oblast. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) also noted that Russian occupiers had intensified efforts to expand the front line in the northern part of Sumy Oblast.
