Defense Committee rejects some controversial mobilization bill provisions

While preparing the mobilization
reform bill for its second reading, Ukraine’s parliamentary Defense
Committee has struck some of the more contentious provisions proposed by the
government, ruling Servant of the People party MP Iryna Friz said in a Facebook
post on Feb. 28.
Specifically, the committee did not support freezing bank accounts of draft dodgers, electronic draft notices, or lowering the conscription age from 27 to 25 years.
The committee also rejected mandatory electronic accounts for all draft-eligible citizens, leaving it as an opt-in measure. It would allow military personnel, reservists, and conscripts to review and update their personal data remotely.
Some other provisions of the bill, such as allowing the police to serve draft notices, remain under discussion in the committee, according to Friz.
The committee will continue its work on the draft law in the coming days, before reviewing over 4,000 amendments proposed by MPs.
