U.S.-supplied M113 armored personnel carriers (APCs) operated by the Ukrainian military are now certified to get fitted with Ukrainian-made turrets, Ukraine’s Defense Ministry announced on Aug. 5.

According to the message, equipping U.S-made vehicles with turrets of domestic design and manufacture will speed up repairs and maintenance of the APCs, in addition to hardening the vehicles against Russian drone attacks.

“A new armored turret, developed in Ukraine, can be installed on all modifications of M113 armored personnel carriers,” the ministry said.

“This design ensures the protection of the gunner from small arms fire and heavy machine guns, as well as shrapnel.”

The turret in question is equipped with a M2 Browning 12.7mm machine gun and can be further upgraded with an Mk 19 automatic grenade launcher or M47 Dragon and BGM-71 TOW anti-tank systems.

Currently, the Ukrainian military operates about 20 different foreign-made APC models. These include the LAV-TCV, FV432, FV105, M1126 Stryker, FV103 Spartan, M113A3, YPR-765A1, VAB, XA-185 PASI, among others.
