Deploying Western troops in Ukraine 'gaining momentum' — Netherlands

“We are compelled to think about this now; but it is still in its early stages,” Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant quoted Brekelmans.

“Everything I say about it is premature. However, this discussion has started in several capitals and may be gaining momentum.” 

He noted that it will take some time before any position on this matter becomes more concrete, as no clear proposals exist yet.

“The risk in [peace] negotiations now is that Russia holds the upper hand,” Brekelmans added.

“Russia will sell its bear’s skin dearly. They can sit back and wait, which could swiftly place Ukraine in the position of a supplicant. No deal can be reached without the Ukrainians' involvement; they must be at the negotiating table. They are ready to negotiate but from a strong starting position, which requires as many military resources as possible.”

He also stressed the need for tangible security guarantees to prevent Russian dictator Vladimir Putin from launching another invasion of Ukraine.

“We must also consider what will happen if a cease-fire or truce is agreed upon,” the minister said.

“Ukraine will need security guarantees because we know that Putin might begin testing this agreement the day after [it’s signed].”
