Russian war

A disturbing Russian military practice of punishing soldiers by tying them to trees and leaving them vulnerable to Ukrainian night drone attacks was revealed in a video posted on the Butusov Plus Telegram channel on Feb. 22.

The Russian soldiers are reportedly left as sacrificial offerings to be killed by Ukrainian night drones named after the mythical figure Baba Yaga.

“This is a real sacrifice, something that has never been shown in a movie about the war before. The war to the last Russian, Russian commanders will kill anyone who refuses to go to the meat grinder attack,” commented the commander of the 60th Separate Mechanized Brigade, Andriy Borodin.

Days later, another video surfaced of another hapless soldier, Ivan “Small” Tretyakov, who found himself wired to a tree, anxiously scanning the sky for the inevitable. “I am no longer alive,” he reportedly said, fully aware that his fate had already been sealed.

As Russian commanders run out of strategies—and men—the tradition of “sacrificing” their own seems to be the only plan left.

Baba Yaga is the nickname for a number of Ukrainian heavy bomber drones used against Russian forces on the frontlines.

On Feb. 20, Defense Ministry Procurement Department Director Hlib Kanevskyi announced plans to allocate over 44 billion hryvnias ($1.1 billion) for FPV drone procurement in 2025, including fiber-optic-guided drones.
