The fire was reported at the substation's 110-kilovolt open switchyard. Local residents said explosions were heard in the area at about 1 a.m. local time.
According to the Telegram channel, the 330/110-kV West Crimea substation is a key element of the peninsula's electricity transmission and distribution network, carrying power from generating facilities to end users. It supplies electricity to central and western Crimea, where numerous Russian military facilities are located.
The same substation was previously targeted by drones on June 22.
On June 30, a fire also broke out at the traction substation of the Poshtova railway station in the Bakhchysarai district of Russian-occupied Crimea.
The Poshtova railway station is located about 15 kilometers (9 miles) from Simferopol.
Situation in Crimea
Crimea's fuel crisis deepened in June after repeated Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil infrastructure and logistics facilities. Multi-kilometer traffic jams have formed at exit routes from the peninsula, while the Russian-installed authorities have closed children's camps and the tourist season has effectively collapsed.
On June 25, the Russian-controlled utility Krymenergo announced temporary power outages across Crimea.
Crimea has come under near-nightly drone attacks, with explosions reported in multiple cities. The Ukrainian military has reported strikes on Russian military facilities, electrical substations and oil terminals. Ukrainian forces have also targeted bridges and crossings linking Crimea with Russian-occupied areas of southern Ukraine.
On June 26, the Russian-installed authorities declared a state of emergency across the peninsula.
On June 28, a fire broke out near fuel storage tanks at the Saky Thermal Power Plant following an overnight attack. During the strikes, the Crimean Wind Telegram channel reported 16 explosions over the course of an hour, with smoke visible over the area.
