Earlier Russian attack severely damaged DTEK thermal plant, energy company reports

The Russian attack inflicted severe damage to the company's equipment, the company said. Power engineers worked quickly to assess and mitigate the consequences of the attack.

"In the face of enemy attacks, DTEK Energy continues to do everything possible to maintain the reliable operation of the Ukrainian power system," the company’s press statement reads.

“The company is synchronizing its actions with (national power company) Ukrenergo.”

DTEK noted that the last time the enemy had targeted one of its thermal power plants was on Aug. 24.

According to the company, since the fall of 2022, the Russian military has attacked DTEK Energy's energy facilities 35 times. As a result, three power engineers were killed and 28 injured. In addition, contractors and rescuers were killed and injured.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy enacted a decision of the National Security and Defense Council to ensure the security of Ukraine's critical infrastructure and energy facilities.

UK intelligence reported that while Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure are likely to continue this winter, Ukraine demonstrated last winter that it has the skilled workers and experience needed to maintain its energy network even under wartime conditions.

In October, the Ukrainian government supported the establishment of a coordination headquarters for rapid response and ensuring normal living conditions for the population. The headquarters will respond to attacks and coordinate the aftermath.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov said that Ukraine would respond to Russian attacks on energy infrastructure. Before winter, the Ukrainian leadership is negotiating with partners to strengthen air defense to protect against Russian strikes.
