The project, known as the "Eastern Shield," involves the construction of fortification structures and infrastructure to meet defense needs.
"Construction of the Eastern Shield has begun! The first works on the border with Russia," Tusk wrote.
The official first announced plans to build the defensive fortifications, known as Tarcza Wschod ('Eastern Shield'), in June 2024. The project includes the construction of a network of fortifications, fences, bunkers, and reconnaissance systems along 400 kilometers of the border with Russia and Belarus to deter potential aggression and protect against migrant influxes.
The cost of the Eastern Shield is estimated at 10 billion zlotys (over $2.5 billion), with completion planned for 2028.
