Egypt will no longer accept grain illegally exported by Russia from occupied Ukrainian territory, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on April 3.

On April 2, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin told Egypt’s foreign minister that the Kremlin intends to create a “grain and energy hub” in Egypt, Reuters reported. An Egyptian official told Reuters the country “welcomes Russian initiatives,” but gave no details.

Reuters said Russia is seeking new routes for exporting energy and raw materials as it faces Western sanctions. In that context, Egypt could become a logistics center for Russian shipments to Africa and the Middle East. Reuters also reported Russia is considering a grain hub in Oman and that Putin has previously promoted a gas hub in Turkey, though those efforts have produced little progress.
