Commenting on the news of the government’s breakup, Musk
wrote in German: “Olaf ist ein Narr” (“Olaf is a fool”).
In a response to a direct question from a user on X asking
if he meant the German chancellor, Musk replied with a thumbs-up emoji and a
laughing emoji.
Collapse of the coalition in Germany
The ruling coalition in Germany collapsed after Chancellor
Olaf Scholz dismissed Finance Minister Christian Lindner on November 6. Other
ministers from his Free Democratic Party followed suit.
According to The Guardian, government insiders had
speculated that a victory by Donald Trump in the U.S. presidential elections
would draw attention to Germany, forcing leaders of the Social Democratic
Party, the Greens, and the Free Democratic Party (FDP) to recognize the need
for unity. However, infighting and animosity in Berlin continued, leading to
what is now described as “political chaos” in Europe’s largest economy.
Journalists report that Lindner’s resignation will likely
lead to early Bundestag elections in March 2025, six months earlier than
planned.
A poll released on Nov. 8 by the INSA opinion research
institute for Bild showed that 57% of German respondents support the idea of
holding early Bundestag elections following the collapse of the ruling
coalition.
