Estonia ready to host allied nuclear weapons if needed – Foreign Minister

He stressed that Europe should not rule out NATO’s supranational nuclear deterrence.

“We are not opposed to the deployment of nuclear weapons on our territory. We have no doctrine that would exclude this if NATO deems it necessary, in line with our defense plans, to deploy, for example, nuclear weapons on our territory,” the Estonian minister said.

On Feb. 15, Politico reported that several European countries have publicly announced their intention to join talks on creating a shared nuclear deterrent in Europe in addition to the U.S. one.

On Jan. 29, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Berlin is discussing with European states the possibility of a joint nuclear deterrent that would complement the American “nuclear umbrella.” However, those discussions are at an early stage.

On Feb. 13, Bloomberg, citing sources, reported that European countries are for the first time since the end of the Cold War discussing the possibility of creating their own nuclear defense system, as the United States is no longer seen as a reliable military partner.
