12th package of EU sanctions targets Medvedev’s son, military-industrial complex

The sanctions target several Russian factories involved in military production, including the Perm Powder Factory, Chelyabinsk Tractor Factory, 123rd Aviation Repair, Kazan aviation and helicopter factories, Novosibirsk Aviation Plant, Specmash, Tupolev, and others.

Notably, 28-year-old Ilya Medvedev, son of the former Russian Prime Minister and President Dmitry Medvedev, has been included in the list of targeted individual sanctions. Other specifically targeted individuals include Boris Obnosov (CEO of the Tactical Missile Weapons corporation), head of the General Staff of the Russian Aerospace Forces, Viktor Afzalov, and various members of the Russian Central Election Commission.

EU sanctions have also fallen on Russian media outlets and their leadership, including Crimea Telecom and its CEO Ivan Zima, Miranda Media, MirTelecom, Bison, Spas and Tsargrad TV channels, among others.

This 12th package of sanctions was coordinated with the U.S., said U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller on Dec. 18.

“We have coordinated with the EU on those sanctions, as we have with the EU on sanctions since the outset of this conflict,” Miller said.

Work is also ongoing to “hold accountable those who try to evade our sanctions and impose new sanctions if we do see the ones we have being eroded in any way,” he added.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that the new sanctions further restrict Russia’s economic capability.

“It's important that for the first time there is a ban on Russian diamonds and diamonds,” said Zelenskyy.

“New measures against circumventing sanctions and against the supply of dual-use goods and technologies to Russia... There are new restrictions on imports from Russia. All this will really help reduce the economic base of the war, and we will continue to work with partners to ensure that the sanctions applied by Europe work globally.”
