EU’s $104 billion Ukraine loan does not concern Hungary — Peter Magyar

As reported by The Guardian on April 13, Magyar pointed to Hungary having an opt-out from contributing to the loan in the first place.

“Speaking of Ukraine, Magyar signals he is happy with the EUR90bn Ukraine deal as agreed in December last year, which included an opt-out for Hungary (alongside Czech Republic and Slovakia) so they would not have to commit any money,” The Guardian said.

Local outlet Hvg.hu quoted Magyar as saying he would agree to the loan and would not block it, breaking with the current obstructionist policy of PM Viktor Orban.

At the same time, Magyar said he opposes accelerated EU membership for Ukraine.

“It would be impossible for a country at war to be taken by the EU,” he said, adding that the accession process will likely take over a decade.
