The European Union plans to create a new position for a special envoy in charge of matters related to Ukrainian citizens living in the EU, Politico reported on June 12.

According to unnamed sources, Swedish politician and former European Commissioner for Home Affairs (2019–2024) Ylva Johansson will be appointed to the position.

Johansson has visited Ukraine several times, including a trip to a refugee camp near the Romanian border, and she was awarded the Ukrainian Order of Merit in September 2024.

Her new role will include coordinating the work of EU authorities and NGOs, representing the interests of Ukrainian refugees in the bloc, and implementing practical support measures on their behalf.

On June 4, Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne reported that the European Commission is proposing to extend temporary protection for Ukrainians in all EU countries until March 4, 2027.

The Ukrainian government estimates that about 5 million Ukrainians live in Europe.
