The European Union has not decided whether to extend temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees for another year, European Commission spokesman Markus Lammert said on May 18.

Lammert said talks on prolonging support measures for Ukrainian nationals are ongoing and not yet concluded.

"In March, at the Justice and Home Affairs Council meeting, the commission effectively opened discussions with member states, so the talks are continuing,” he said.

“We believe this is a necessary discussion. It's about supporting Ukraine and refugees. So it's happening, but at this stage no decision has been made.”

He added that the discussions are needed to ensure continued support for Ukraine and its citizens.

On May 13, the EU's special envoy for Ukrainians, Ylva Johansson, told DW she expects temporary protection to be extended through 2028.

"Given the current situation, I think the commission will propose extending it for another year — to March 2028. And I think member states will agree," she said.
