Washington expects Europe to provide Ukraine with “significant” security guarantees, with the United States playing a supporting role, U.S. President Donald Trump said on Aug. 25.

“I want to stop seeing people getting killed,” Trump said at a press event at the White House.

“First of all, Europe will give them [Ukraine] significant security guarantees, and they have to do it because they are close by. But we are going to be involved in terms of support, we will assist them.”

The president then boasted about ending all financial aid to Kyiv, saying that “we’re no longer paying Ukraine any money.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously said work has begun on the details of future security guarantees following talks in Washington with Trump and European leaders.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Trump and his European counterparts agreed to have U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio lead a special working group. Its members—national security advisers and NATO representatives—will draft a package of security guarantees for Ukraine.

Rubio told European partners that the United States is prepared to participate in post-war guarantees for Ukraine but emphasized that Europe should take the lead.

At the same time, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov insisted that Moscow must be one of the parties providing post-war security arrangements for Ukraine, along with its ally, China.
