European Parliament approves European Commission composition led by Ursula von der Leyen

The new commission was supported by 370 MEPs, with 282 voting against, out of a total of 688 lawmakers.

Marta Kos, a politician and diplomat from Slovenia, has been appointed as the European Commissioner for Enlargement, a role crucial for Ukraine.

“We want Ukraine as part of the European Union. So, we will stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes,” von der Leyen said while presenting candidates for EC membership for final approval in the European Parliament.

“We will support [candidate] countries every step of the way on their merits-based process until they are ready to join our Union.”

Kaja Kallas, the former Prime Minister of Estonia, has been appointed as the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission.

Elections for the European Commission took place in EU countries from June 6 to June 9, 2024. In September, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi stated that Brussels' support for Ukraine would remain unchanged despite the new composition of the European Commission.

The European Parliament had approved all candidates for the European Commission by Nov. 20.
