A Russian bomber accidentally dropped a 500-kilogram high-explosive bomb in Saratov Oblast's Engels city for the first time, news channel Astra reported on Telegram on Oct. 15.

The FAB-500 bomb detached abnormally from the aircraft over a field near Kvasnikovka village, part of Engels, on Oct. 12, Astra said, citing an unnamed source in Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry. The bomb did not explode, and no casualties were reported.

Engels hosts a key Russian air base for strategic aviation. Ukraine's General Staff says planes taking off from there launch missile strikes on Ukraine.

Astra is aware of at least 126 aerial bombs (119 FABs and seven UMPBs) and three missiles that have fallen from Russian aircraft in Russia and occupied Ukrainian territories since the start of 2025. In 2024, at least 165 such bombs fell in those areas.

Journalists noted that to counter Ukrainian air defenses, Russian forces began equipping Soviet-era FAB bombs with UMPK munition guidance kits. The upgrades add wings and satellite guidance, allowing launches from inside Russia.

However, due to the kits' imperfections, the bombs sometimes fail to reach targets and drop on Russian soil.
