Former Ukrainian defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov was on his way to Washington D.C. as of 10.00 p.m. Kyiv time on Aug. 28, RFE/RL correspondent Alex Raufoglu reported.

“Ukraine’s recently ousted Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov is headed to Washington tonight, sources tell me,” Raufoglu wrote in a Twitter post.

Earlier the same day, Fedorov announced he had accepted an offer to serve as an adviser to Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto. Fedorov said Crosetto personally invited him to join the effort. In the role, Fedorov will help Italy develop advanced defense technologies, strengthen its defense sector, and adapt to emerging security challenges.

Fedorov also said his primary focus remained unchanged and that he would continue working in Ukraine. After his appointment in Italy, Fedorov said his international trip would continue.

On Aug. 19, The Kyiv Independent reported that Fedorov could travel to the United States as early as the following week. The Guardian, meanwhile, suggested the visit could be related to efforts to seek U.S. support for holding wartime elections in Ukraine.
