The chances of ending the Russo–Ukrainian war through negotiations are now the best they have been since late 2022, British economic historian Niall Ferguson said in an interview with NV on Sept. 28.

Ferguson said that if peace is achieved, it will likely be the result of U.S. diplomatic efforts.

“In my view, it is highly significant that [U.S. envoys] Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff were here [in Kyiv] alongside national security advisers from the United Kingdom, France, and Germany,” the historian said.

“This is a new diplomatic lineup, and I think it is the most promising option we have seen. Of course, negotiations for such a peace agreement will inevitably be very difficult. That is normal. We should not expect it to happen overnight, given the deep differences between Russia and Ukraine. But I believe the chances of achieving peace through negotiations are better than ever before, with the possible exception of late 2022.”

He also said the war would not have gone this far if the United States had not supported Ukraine and China had not supported Russia.

“And in that sense, we have to recognize reality: The war will most likely end when pressure from the United States — and perhaps China as well — becomes decisive,” Ferguson said.
