Russian war

The situation on the Kupyansk front has deteriorated as Russian forces have stepped up offensive operations and are applying pressure to Ukrainian positions, military spokesman Viktor Tregubov said on May 1.

Tregubov said Kupyansk remains one of the hottest areas on the front. In recent months, he said, Russian forces have repeatedly attacked to approach the city and push Ukrainian units across the Oskil River.

The Russians, he said, have been using small infantry groups trying to advance covertly, making use of engineering structures and, in some cases, gas pipelines. Most of those attempts have been stopped before reaching Ukrainian positions.

Key terrain includes Kupyansk itself and the right bank of the Oskil. Russian forces have tried to advance from the north and have managed some limited gains near Holubivka. Attacks continue on the northern outskirts of the city, and there have been efforts to increase pressure on the left bank, where Ukrainian forces hold a bridgehead.

The fiercest fighting is around Kivsharivka, where Russian units are attacking from multiple directions, Tregubov added.
