Biden to boost Ukraine with massive arms package before leaving office

The package will be one of the largest provided under the Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA), which allows the U.S. to draw from current weapons stocks to help allies in an emergency. Recent packages announced by Biden have typically ranged from $125 million to $250 million.

According to a source, it is expected to include anti-tank weapons, anti-personnel landmines, cluster munitions for GMLRS missiles, drones, Stinger missiles and ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS).

Official notification to Congress is expected in the coming days, but adjustments may be made before Biden signs it.

Despite international bans on anti-personnel mines, Ukraine insists on supplying them to protect its territory, with the United States emphasizing that their use is exclusively in military zones and poses no threat to civilians.

The Biden administration still has $4-5 billion in PDA approved by Congress, leaving some funds at the discretion of the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump, who will take office on Jan. 20, 2025.

This follows an earlier Wall Street Journal report on Nov. 27 that the Biden administration is running out of time to spend the billions of dollars approved by Congress to arm Ukraine.
