More and more people around the world are learning Ukrainian as a symbol of solidarity following Russia’s aggressive war of conquest, as is evidenced by Duolingo’s 2023 statistics.

The popular language learning app referenced the sharp uptick in language learners, noting that more than 1 in 3 (37%) of new users worldwide that are learning Ukrainian are motivated by a desire for effective communication and a show of solidarity.

This percentage stands out when compared to the 17% of users learning English and the 18% studying French for similar reasons.

Duolingo's data identifies learners from Australia, Canada, and Finland as the most committed to pursuing the Ukrainian language, as measured by the average time dedicated to learning. Ukrainian users rank among the Top 5 in terms of commitment.

Also in the Top 5 are language learners from Belarus, Japan, Hungary, and Russia have the highest average learning times across all Duolingo language learners.
