Ukrainian linguist and former MP Iryna Farion was shot in Lviv on July 19.

Lviv city councilman Ihor Zinkevych reported the apparent assassination attempt via Facebook. According to him, Farion was severely wounded and is in critical condition.

“Neighbors saw the shooter; he was wearing gloves, and the weapon did not have a silencer,” Zinkevych added.

Oleh Pankevych, Farion’s party colleague, confirmed to public broadcaster Suspilne that Farion was indeed shot in Lviv. Marta Oliarnyk, a journalist at Espreso, also corroborated the information through her sources.

Oliarnyk specified that Farion was shot in the head and was taken away by ambulance.

The Lviv police have confirmed the attempted assassination of a 60-year-old public figure, without explicitly naming Farion.

“A perpetrator shot a public figure in Lviv—a special police operation is underway to apprehend the suspect,” the police stated.

“The wounded individual has been hospitalized, and medics are currently fighting to save her life.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy later said that Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko and SBU security service head Vasyl Malyuk are personally overseeing the investigation of the attempt on Farion’s life.

“All the necessary resources of the National Police and SBU are applied to establish the circumstances on this crime,” Zelenskyy said in a Telegram post.

“Doctors are fighting for the life of Iryna Farion.”
