Fortifications on the border with Belarus in Zhytomyr Oblast are nearly complete, with local authorities asserting that an invasion from the north through the region is unlikely.

Vitalii Bunechko, Zhytomyr regional governor, shared this information in an interview with Interfax Ukraine.

He stated that the fortifications on the border are 99% ready.

“In some places, builders are correcting minor flaws, we’re conducting inspections to ensure quality, and there are still some contracts to finalize and payments to settle. But our fortifications are fully prepared, and if anyone attempts to cross our northern border, our platoon and company strongpoints, along with the obstacle lines, are ready to meet the enemy,” Bunechko said.

Bunechko noted that there is a nationwide concept for building defense lines in the border areas. According to him, the military has prepared new projects and recommendations on how to make the border and the oblast a “hellish trap for the enemy.”

“The likelihood of an invasion through Zhytomyr Oblast is very low because we are heavily mined. And when Russia’s neighboring vassal speaks of troop movements and other activities, we feel very confident about our defense line at the border. I believe they are aware of this,” the regional head added.

On Aug. 18, Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko claimed he was “forced” to move nearly a third of his army to the border with Ukraine due to the alleged presence of more than 120,000 Ukrainian troops there.

Previously, Lukashenko stated that if Russia were to face aggression against Belarus, it would deploy its troops to provide so-called military support.

On Aug. 19, the Associated Press reported that Belarus had deployed aviation and air defense forces near the border with Ukraine.

On Aug. 22, Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service reported that the situation on the border with Belarus remains under control, with no enemy sabotage and reconnaissance groups or other provocations observed.

On Aug. 23, the monitoring project the Belarusian Hajun reported that since Aug. 10, Belarus has moved at least 1,000 troops to the Gomel Oblast.
