“Our compatriot, the photojournalist Antoni Lallican, was accompanying the Ukrainian army on the battlefield,” Macron wrote in a Twitter post.
“I learned with deep sadness of his death, a victim of a Russian drone attack. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, his loved ones, as well as to all his colleagues who, at the peril of their lives, inform us and bear witness to the reality of the war.”
Also offering sympathy was Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, who pointed out that Lallican’s vest was clearly marked PRESS.
“Russia continues to deliberately target journalists—a horrific crime and a violation of international humanitarian law,” Sybiha said on Twitter.
“We will spare no effort to hold those responsible to account. Antoni Lallican’s courage in bringing the truth about Russian aggression to the world will never be forgotten.”
Lallican, 34, died Oct. 3 after being struck by a first-person-view (FPV) drone near Druzhkivka in Donetsk Oblast. Georgiy Ivanchenko, a correspondent for the Kyiv Independent who was working alongside him, was wounded but is in stable condition, according to Ukraine’s 4th Mechanized Brigade.
