French Mirage 2000-5F fighters have likely been seen in Ukrainian skies for the first time, according to a report by defense-focused news outlet Army Recognition on March 4.

The publication referred to a video published by Telegram channel Sonyashnyk (Ukrainian for “sunflower”), which shows a Mirage jet flying over reportedly Ukrainian soil.

Experts believe that Mirage 2000 is difficult to confuse with any other aircraft due to its distinctive features.

The report added that the Mirage 2000-5F, initially developed as an air superiority fighter and now supplied to Ukraine, has been upgraded for air-to-ground mission support.

French President Emmanuel Macron first announced the transfer of Mirage 2000-5F aircraft to Ukraine on June 6, 2024. He stated that France would provide the aircraft and train Ukrainian pilots without specifying the exact number of jets or whether they would come directly from French stockpiles.

On Feb. 10, it was reported that France modified the supersonic Mirage 2000-5 fighters sent to Ukraine, equipping them with SCALP-EG cruise missiles and Hammer bombs.

According to Le Monde, the French Air and Space Force committed to training 26 Ukrainian military pilots over two years. As noted by Avionslegendaires, France plans to provide Ukraine with up to 20 Mirage 2000-5 fighters as part of military aid.
