Denmark dismisses Hungary’s ‘strategic partnership’ proposal for Ukraine

“I will not allow one country to determine the future of all Europe,” Frederiksen said at a press conference following a European Political Community summit in Copenhagen.

She said decisions on EU enlargement must be made jointly by all member states and that the bloc’s strategy includes integrating Ukraine and Moldova.

Frederiksen praised Ukraine’s progress of passing reforms necessary for EU accession, saying the country has “done amazing work, even during the war.” She added that even if Hungary continues to block the first accession negotiation cluster, work with the European Commission and preparations for Ukraine’s EU entry must continue.

Earlier, Hungarian PM Viktor Orban said Budapest does not Ukraine in military or political structures like NATO or the EU.

“So my proposal, Hungary’s proposal, is to sign a strategic agreement with Ukraine, not membership,” he said on Oct. 1.

Hungary remains the sole EU member state blocking further negotiations on Kyiv’s accession. On Sept. 30, the Financial Times, citing officials familiar with the process, reported that the EU was preparing technical work on admitting Ukraine and Moldova despite Hungary’s veto.
