Russian forces have recently been publicizing a modified Geran Seeker drone, described as a Shahed-type variant designed to search for and destroy targets, Serhii “Flash” Beskrestnov, an adviser to Ukraine’s defense minister, reported on Telegram on June 30.

The Seeker option may have been installed on all versions of the Geran drone family. The version most often seen now is the jet-powered Geran-4 Seeker, Flash added.

According to the adviser, such drones are equipped with several cameras operating in different modes. They also carry MESH modems that allow the pilot to control the drone.

The most important feature of the Seeker function is that it can automatically recognize, lock onto, and guide itself toward a target.

For example, if a Seeker pilot selects the locomotive of a train from a distance of about one kilometer, a low-power electronic warfare system on the locomotive would not be enough to protect it. The drone’s artificial intelligence would carry the Seeker to the target without further operator involvement.
