He made the statement in Berlin at an event focused on security policy, as reported by German broadcaster ntv.
Merz added that he will also "inform European partners" about the trip and its outcomes. His last visit to Ukraine was in 2022.
The CDU leader called on European countries to provide greater support to Ukraine.
“It is essential to support Ukraine with all necessary diplomatic, financial, humanitarian, and even military means so that it can exercise its right to self-defense and restore its territorial integrity,” said Merz.
“Ukraine must win the war, and Russia must lose.”
However, Merz acknowledged that Germany should not become directly involved in the conflict.
"This is not up for discussion; we do not want this, and will do this," he added.
On Dec. 2, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz made an unannounced visit to Kyiv for the first time in two and a half years. On the same day, he announced a military aid package for Ukraine valued at $683 million.
According to German tabloid Bild, Scholz was probing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s readiness to engage in negotiations with Russia.
