Voters in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are due to elect a new state government on September 20, and a recent poll puts the AfD far ahead at 36%, followed by the Social Democrats at 29%.
With its polling numbers sitting at a meager 9%, the CDU decided to form an advisory team to counter the steady growth of the AfD.
The team includes a headmaster, the founder of a start-up, as well as farmers and a nationally known police unionist.
CDU lead candidate Daniel Peters stated that the team’s primary aim was to identify the main “issues” facing voters and focus on the “right solutions” in the campaign.
Bloomberg reported on July 18 that German intelligence agencies are rushing to secure sensitive data to prevent it from being compromised if the far-right AfD party wins control of a state government for the first time in history.
