German Chancellor Olaf Scholz dismissed Finance Minister
Christian Lindner, the leader of the Free Democratic Party, effectively
dissolving the multi-party governing coalition, German newspaper Spiegel
reported on Nov. 6.
Without the Free Democrats, the coalition no longer holds a majority in the Bundestag, the German parliament.
BBC reported that government spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit confirmed Lindner's resignation to AFP.
In recent days, German media have reported tensions among the three coalition parties: the Social Democrats, led by Scholz, the Free Democrats, and the Greens. This calls the government's future into question.
Previously, Justice Minister Marco Buschmann, Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger, and parliamentary group leader Christian Dürr also stepped down.
Earlier on Nov. 6, in an interview with Bild, Lindner suggested holding early elections.
