Sinwar Jr. is actively working to rebuild Hamas’s combat strength through recruitment efforts after Israeli military operations severely weakened the group’s capabilities, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Hamas once had up to 30,000 fighters organized into battalions resembling a regular army, but the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) dismantled that structure, killing about 17,000 militants and detaining thousands.
The current number of new recruits is unknown.
After Yahya Sinwar's death, Hamas's political leadership in Qatar opted for collective management instead of appointing a new leader.
However, militants in Gaza, led by Mohammed Sinwar, are acting autonomously.
Mohammed is reportedly close to Mohammed al-Deif, who was killed in a July 2024 Israeli strike. Sinwar Jr., believed to be around 50, has long been involved with Hamas and evaded Israeli intelligence, earning the nickname "Shadow."
Despite less visibility than his brother Yahya, who spent over two decades in an Israeli prison, Mohammed Sinwar is considered a high-ranking leader in Gaza, alongside Izz al-Din Haddad.
Israeli authorities also believe he played a role in the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel and the 2006 kidnapping of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, which led to a prisoner swap involving Yahya Sinwar.
