House will not vote on Biden’s $24 billion Ukraine aid request — Speaker Johnson

Previously, U.S. President Joe Biden had proposed that Congress approve an additional $24 billion in funding to bolster assistance for Ukraine. The White House stated that these funds were intended to forestall President-elect Donald Trump from cutting U.S. assistance to Kyiv.

In a comment to Voice of America about whether he plans to bring additional aid to a vote, Mike Johnson said Congress will follow the directives of the President-elect.

“Joe Biden does not have the authority to make such a decision,” said Johnson.

“We have a newly elected president, and we will wait and follow the instructions of the new commander-in-chief on all of this. So I do not expect any funding for Ukraine to be brought to the table at this time.”

He also reiterated his previous remarks that Trump’s victory is likely to change the dynamics of Russia's war against Ukraine.

On Dec. 2, the U.S. announced a military aid package for Ukraine worth $725 million. The package includes ammunition for HIMARS rocket artillery, unmanned systems, anti-personnel mines, and anti-tank Javelin missile systems.
