“Russia’s brutal overnight attack on Kyiv is yet another horrific reminder of the human cost of this war. Civilians should never wake up to missiles, drones, explosions and fear for their lives. Destroyed homes, shattered families, innocent people killed and wounded — this is unacceptable,” Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán wrote.
“We strongly condemn the attack and stand with the victims and the people of Ukraine,” she added.
Overnight into May 24, Russian forces launched a massive drone and missile attack on Kyiv. Debris and damage were reported in every district of the city. Authorities said at least two people were killed and 81 injured.
On May 13, Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar said his government condemned a Russian drone strike on Ukraine’s Zakarpattia Oblast. Hungary’s Foreign Ministry then summoned the Russian ambassador in Budapest, while Anita Orbán publicly condemned the actions of Russian forces.
Her predecessor as foreign minister, Peter Szijjarto, had never summoned the Russian ambassador following previous Russian attacks on Zakarpattia.
On May 22, Anita Orbán met for the first time with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.
“I see a willingness to hear one another and jointly open a new chapter in our bilateral relations,” Sybiha said after the meeting.
